After receiving an official rejection of meaningful dialogue from York University president, Mamdouh Shoukri, protesters have gathered at York University’s Board of Governors meeting to demand the reversal of sanctions against their club and trespass notice against a York alumnus. In response to a peaceful protest in March 2013 demanding divestment from weapons manufacturing corporations responsible for the oppression and murder of students’ families in Palestine and elsewhere, the York University administration revoked the official student club status of SAIA, issued a trespass notice to a York alumnus, and sent threatening letters of warning to several student leaders from different clubs. Protesters are also demanding that University policies be amended to be more compatible with values of freedom of expression and assembly, in accordance with the recommendations of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Ontario Civil Liberties Association, and the Canadian Association of University Teachers.
